North coast of Barcelona
The north coast of Barcelona stretches all the way up to the French border and is covered by two larger areas: Maresme and the Costa Brava.
The area of Maresme comprises a number of smaller villages and residential neighbourhoods. The area is ideally suited to those looking to enjoy a home close to both nature and the Mediterranean, whilst remaining in close proximity to the beating heart of Barcelona. Thanks to its great links to Barcelona city by both train and car, many people commute between Maresme and Barcelona every day. This means that there is life in the villages around Maresme all year round – whilst they may be filled with visitors during the summer months, there is no real low season, meaning that the restaurants and shops maintain the same opening hours throughout the year. The area is a hive of activities, and you can find everything from horse riding and hiking in the beautiful mountains that form Maresme’s backdrop, to sailing and diving in the Mediterranean, lapping at the district’s coastline. The strip of land between mountain and sea is also home to beautiful golf courses and tennis clubs. Maresme’s kilometre-long beaches with their crystal clear water also attract many city dwellers to the area at the weekends. Costa Brava translates as wild or rugged coast, in reference to the area’s stunning stony shoreline, stretching from the town of Blanes all the way up to the French border in the north. The bays for which the area is known, with their beautiful green pine trees stretching all the way down to the clear blue Mediterranean, offer no end of idyllic summer experiences. After the high season, May–September, is an excellent time to explore some of the many vineyards in the Empordà wine region. Wine tourism is booming in Empordà, with plenty of vineyards to visit, offering tastings, picnics amongst the vines, and overnight stays. The Costa Brava is a very attractive option for buyers looking to use their property during the late spring, summer months, and early autumn.
