Barceloneta was originally a fishing village, settled by fishermen in the 18th century. The area remained untouched up until 1992, when it was given a facelift prior to the Olympic Games. Barceloneta’s coastline, which was lined with maritime and metal industry facilities, was cleaned up to give way to what today is Barceloneta’s kilometre-long golden sandy beach. Alongside the calm of the old fishing village, another side to the town has developed, and the area has become very popular internationally, bringing life to Barceloneta.
Today, Barceloneta is known primarily for its beach. During the day the beach is full of activity, drawing in tourists and Spaniards alike, all keen to sunbathe, swim, play volleyball and enjoy the weather. On the beach itself you will also find a number of small, cosy beach restaurants, or chiringuitos, playing music and serving everything from lunch to snacks and cava.
Sun and swimming, running, and walks in the warming evening sun, followed by a magical sunset, is just scratching the surface of what the area has to offer. And let’s not forget the great range of restaurants, bars and night clubs. However, what really sets Barceloneta apart is the fact it is home to Barcelona’s best pickings of fish and shellfish.
From Barceloneta metro station you can be in the city in minutes, or if you prefer, Las Ramblas or Plaça de Catalunya are just a short walk away. There are also buses running from Barceloneta up to the higher areas of Barcelona.
Typical Barceloneta properties can be found in the old fishermen’s houses, are approximately 30squaremetres in size, and are just a few steps from an idyllic morning dip in the Mediterranean.
