About Zona Alta
Zona Alta is the name of the area of Sarrià-Sant Gervasi. The first mentions of the area data back to 987, and for many years it was a small Roman colony. The village was sparsely inhabited until the mid 1800s, at which point there was a major influx due to the calm and charm of the area. In 1921 Sarrià-Sant Gervasi became the last area to go from being independent to being annexed by Barcelona.
Sarrià-Sant Gervasi/Zona Alta is one of Barcelona’s largest districts, comprising six sub-districts: Sant Gervasi - Galvany, Les Tres Torres, Sant Gervasi - la Bonanova, Sarrià, El Putxet i el Farró and Vallvidrera, El Tibidabo i les Planes. Sarrià-Sant Gervasi is Barcelona’s most affluent area, with a large number of private schools, clinics and embassies.
The areas differ slightly in that Sarriàis the older part, whilst Sant Gervasi - Galvany is closest to the city. However, one factor common to all of the areas is that Sarriá-Sant Gervasi is a quiet place with plenty of parks and greenery, as well as no shortage of restaurants, bars, cafés and lifestyle boutiques.
The district is also home to one of the most popular peaks, Tibidabo, which in addition to the fantastic view is also home to the Sagrat Cor temple and Spain’s first amusement park. Torre Bellesguard, one of Gaudí’s most popular masterpieces, is also located in Sarría - Sant Gervasi, and the building is very much worth a visit.
The area is located between Pedralbes and Gràcia, above Diagonal, benefiting from good transport links, including the Ferrocarriles (similar to the metro, but extending further out from the city), taking you to Plaça de Catalunya in just five minutes. There are also a number of bus lines serving the area.
Whilst the area does feature some turn-of-the-century properties, the majority are more modern, some with both garages and pools.
