About Sant Martí

Sant Martí was an independent area until 1897, when it was annexed by Barcelona. This large area encompasses 10 smaller sub-districts, stretching from Barcelona’s coast to just above Gran Vía.

Sant Martí was previously Barcelona’s industrial area, and has undergone a major transformation. The area is sometimes known as Barcelona’s Silicon Valley, thanks to its status as the city’s innovation district where sustainability is a clear theme reflected in the urban development and architecture of the area.

The 10 sub-districts vary significantly from each other, offering everything from small, narrow streets that flow onto little squares to larger tree-lined avenues and boulevards. The upper part of Sant Martí is a quiet area relatively unaffected by tourism, whilst innovative companies and commercial operations have found their homes in the former industrial premises in the lower part of Sant Martí.

The area has several metro stations, bus lines and tram connections, taking you into the city within 5–15minutes.
